Somatics

Move Body and Mind

An opportunity to release energy; tone, stretch and mobilise muscles and joints; loosen mental blockages and calm the spirit. Sounds great, doesn’t it? Movement strengthens the body, releases tension and boosts energy – but not all movement works for everyone, at least not until they find the form of exercise that’s right for them. The first step towards exercise joy is working out what meets your specific needs and fits in with your lifestyle and routine. Could Somatics offer you the key to increased physical and mental fitness?

‘Exercise enriches our lives in every way.’

Somatics

Somatic education was originally developed by Dr Thomas Hanna, a student of Moshé Feldenkrais. According to Hanna’s philosophy, natural, healthy movement should be smooth and pain-free. When this is not the case, there are always reasons: our bodies’ muscle reflexes are reactions to daily stresses and our posture reflects physical and psychological issues and injuries. Over time, these reflexes become exclusively experienced as pain (sensory motor amnesia) and this can result in chronic muscle tension and related internal problems. Straightforward somatic exercises involve simple, smooth and gentle movements that resolve this tension and pain, improving long-term quality of life.
